Athletes in Action in the TCL
During the summer of 2003 an agreement was reached that would bring one of the original eight franchises of the Texas Collegiate League to Mineral Wells. The "Steam" name was decided upon by the TCL in recognition of the impact the regional train depot had on Mineral Wells in its early years as a city.
Being familiar with Athletes in Action’s presence in other leagues throughout the country, Wayne Poage, then Texas Collegiate League Commissioner, saw AIA as a potential franchise owner in the TCL but anticipated that happening a couple of years after the league’s inaugural season.
When talks with one potential owner ended without sale, Poage approached Jason Lester, Director of Athletes in Action’s Baseball Department, with the opportunity to purchase the Steam.Within two weeks Lester responded to Poage’s offer by agreeing to purchase the franchise in November of 2003.
Six months later the Steam took the field for the first ever home game in Mineral Wells, TX.
