Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League
In the spring of 1986, Gary Henschen and Lou Laslo contacted the NCAA and sought approval to start a league in the Midwest similar to that of the Cape Cod League. The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League was born from their foresight and vision. Ron Miller and William Caughey worked with Lou and Gary to start the GLSCL and Pepsi, USA became the first league sponsor.
In early January of 1987, league officials attended the NCAA winter baseball meeting in San Diego and helped the Great Lakes League become the first league ever to be
sanctioned by the NCAA and receive funding from Major League Baseball without ever playing a game!
The league is currently one of ten members of the National Alliance of Summer Collegiate Baseball and is partially funded by Major League Baseball. Wooden bats are used to allow professional scouts to better judge the players. The teams are comprised of college players with NCAA eligibility.
Since 1987, over 70 GLSCL alumni have played in Major League Baseball. In the past three years alone, over 130 GLSCL players have been drafted by MLB including eight first-round selections. Listed below is a small sample of the 70 players that have played or are playing in Major League Baseball.
